Dick's Sporting Goods was founded by Dick Stack in 1948.  At the time he was working at an army surplus store in Binghamton, New York where the manager asked him to create a fishermen's line for the store. When Dick presented the idea, he was turned down and then quit working for the store.  He later was funded with his grandmother's life savings of $300 to build his own fishing store, which later became

Dick's Sporting Goods.
